A bit about the cover art

On the cover of Melissa Green's The Squanicook Eclogues (Pen & Anvil, May 2010), a boat moving along a level river is framed by two trees. This New England scene forms part of an 1835 mural adorning the walls of a second-floor room in the historic Reed Homestead, in Townsend, Massachusetts. The mural is attributed to Rufus Porter, itinerant painter, inventor and founder of Scientific American.

About this creative and industrious man, the editors of British magazine Invention, as quoted in Scientific American, wrote in their November 8, 1884 issue:

“Born in the presidency of the illustrious Washington, Rufus Porter lived through the reigns of twenty-one American Presidents, and was himself a living representative of the genius of American invention for over three-quarters of a century.”
