About H&W
Between 1960 and 1963, renowned Wisconsin writer poet, lecturer, editor (etc.) August Derleth (1909-1971) edited and published a magazine with the title Hawk & Whippoorwill devoted to "poems of man and nature."
Though simply designed, the saddle-stitch journal was widely esteemed for its uncommon integrity. Original contributors included James T. Farrell, John Beecher, Felix Stefanile, Carleton Drewry, and Helga Sandburg.
In summer 2008, Augie's "little magazine" was revived by editors Matthew Kelsey and Jon Wooding, with the endorsement and support of April Derleth. This "new series" of the magazine was intended to publish on a semi-annual basis, with new issues being released on the summer solstice and the winter solstice. Four issues were published, before the project went on hiatus. In 2018, the new series was restarted, with Cory Willingham stepping up as the newest editor.
With the publication of Number 6 (Winter 2018), we have adopted a new tagline, replacing the inherited "man and nature" language. From this point, we are a journal devoted to "poems of nature and humankind."
Submissions will typically appear both online and in print, with contributors receiving two complimentary copies each, and the opportunity to purchase additional copies using a contributors' discount. (We regret that as we don't have the budget for international mailing, we aren't able to mail contributor's copies to addresses outside the US. However, we are glad to arrange for local reproduction, or for subsidized delivery.)
Some content designated as online-only will appear on the magazine's website, but not in the print edition.
