For Phyllis by Elisabeth Horan

Remember, Christians, Negros, black as Cain ,
May be refin'd, and join th' angelic train.

Cain, was a white man—if I remember
Correctly—lowly farmer. Murderer.
So darkly beat his heart—when death to Abel
rang: God knew of man's pleonectic refrain—

Yet—Pagan, they labeled her ancestry;
girl of seven, sold at a trifle—stolen
from Senegal to become New England's
Prized Disciple—her liberators claimed:

Heathens can be tamed! Educated! (Con-
tained). How then might diabolic die
compare with her skin? Should not Cain's
act of violence—be the true color of sin?

How then can blue eyes mimic those of God—
if pale children committed crimes in the name of
                                                        the Lord.
